According to Hadiths in Musnad Ahmad and Tabarani, a total of 124,000 prophets were sent to the humanity. The Old Testament has a record of about 16, Torah has around 10, while Quran has mentioned 25 (0.02%). Moreover as per this above mentioned hadith books, 313 of these were the messengers (to whom a law is revealed as distinct from the previous prophets). A prophet is just a successor of a messenger. Among these, 4 were revelaed with divine books.
Only a limited number is mentioned in the holy books, so that the followers can learn lessons from the earlier civilizations who disobeyed the teachings of their propehts. As Allah says: "Indeed, this Qur'an relates to the Children of Israel most of that over which they disagree." (Quran 27:76)
